Context and challenges
In a context marked by growing concerns about energy security and global warming, the French National Low-Carbon Strategy relies on new energy carriers, including ammonia (NH₃), which is promising for industrial applications. Partial cracking of ammonia produces effective NH₃/N₂/H₂ blends suitable for combustion. However, developing flexible and clean burners for these blends remains challenging due to chemical uncertainties and limitations of current numerical models. The use of these fuels also raises questions regarding NOx emissions, unburned ammonia, and potential greenhouse gas emissions.
Scientific objectives
The AMHYABLE project aims to:
- Create an experimental database on laminar and turbulent flames to validate chemical models and numerical tools;
- Develop LES and DNS tools to predict combustion in suitable burners;
- Optimize a porous immersed burner adapted to NH₃/N₂/H₂/air blends;
- Conduct an in-depth analysis of pollutant emissions and their fate in the atmosphere.
This innovative approach combines scientific advances, engineering tools, and consideration of societal issues. By promoting public awareness and acceptance, AMHYABLE proposes solutions for the rapid deployment of ammonia-based combustion technologies, while strengthening cooperation among French stakeholders to address urgent decarbonization needs.
